Conductor & Music Director Richard Giangiulio

In April 2006, Richard Cecil Giangiulio was named as Conductor & Music Director of the Allen Philharmonic. The founding Conductor and Music Director of the Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra since 1979, a position he still holds today, Mr. Giangiulio resigned his position as the Conductor and Music Director of the New Philharmonic of Irving when he accepted the position with the Allen Philharmonic. Mr. Giangiulio is the conductor of the Idyllwild Arts Summer Camp Orchestra program, a cover conductor for the DSO and will be a conductor in the family and Pops series for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra this 2008-2009 season.

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Mr. Giangiulio holds degrees in Music from the Curtis Institute of Music and the Juilliard School of Music. Mr. Giangiulio attended the Conservatoire de Paris as a Fulbright Scholar, where he studied under the under the tutelage of Maurice Andre. In 1967 Richard Giangiulio was the First Medal winner of the prestigious Geneva International Trumpet Convention and began his orchestral career as a member of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1969, he won the audition for the principal trumpet position with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, a position he held until his retirement in 2001. From 1977 until 1982 Mr. Giangiulio was the assistant conductor for educational concerts with the Dallas Symphony developing and conducting multi-age youth concerts and park concerts. He resigned that position to devote more time to his responsibilities with the Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra.

Mr. Giangiulio first began playing at the age of ten when he found his grandfather’s trumpet in the attic. At 14, he won a major competition and was invited to perform "Concert Etude" on a television broadcast. Prior to his acceptance into the Curtis Institute of Music at the age of 16, Mr. Giangiulio made his debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra performing "Showers of Gold." Richard Giangiulio has recorded seven albums for Crystal Records, including solo and chamber music. Some of his most notable recordings include Pistons and Pipes, Treasures for Horn and Trumpet and Music for Festive Occasions. Classical Radio station play lists around the country feature selections from these recordings today. He has performed as a soloist with the Dallas Symphony, the Knoxville Symphony and at festivals in Ansbach, Germany; Lucerne, Switzerland; and Lieksa, Finland.
